Tasting Music: Mozart Piano Quartet in E Flat, K. 493
In 1786, just weeks after completing The Marriage of Figaro, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart wrote his Piano Quartet in E-flat major, K. 493 — now 240 years old and still strikingly fresh. Building on the earlier G minor quartet, Mozart expanded the piano trio by adding viola, creating a richer, more dynamic form. Though his publisher Franz Anton Hoffmeister worried the works were too demanding, Mozart pressed on. The result is a vibrant, mature work performed at WWCMF by Oksana Ejokina, Maria Sampen, Norbert Lewandowski, and Timothy Christie.

Tasting Music: Bartók Piano Quintet in C
A work of sweeping contrast, Béla Bartók’s early Piano Quintet in C traces a path from late-Romantic richness to the folk-infused modernism that would define his voice. Influenced by Johannes Brahms and Richard Strauss, yet already distinctly his own, the piece unfolds in shifting currents of rhythm and color, hinting at the innovations to come.
