Violinist Philip Payton enjoys a diverse career in New York City and around the country. He is currently performing in the six Tony award-winning production of Kinky Boots on Broadway and performs in various other ensembles including the American Ballet Theater, American Symphony, Argento Chamber Opera, Sarasota Orchestra, Charleston Symphony, Harrisburg Symphony, American Modern Ensemble, Harlem Chamber Players and others.
He has recently recorded with John Legend, James Taylor, Billy Ocean and Billy Porter and can be heard on the Grammy Award winning original cast recordings of West Side Story and Kinky Boots, the Grammy nominated The Gershwins' Porgy and Bess, Billy Porter’s Back on Broadway and Broadway and Soul, Harry Connick Jr’s In Concert on Broadway, Billy Joel’s Last Play at Shea, and several others.
He has played on Saturday Night Live, The Today Show, The Late Show with David Letterman, The Tonight Show, Sex and the City, Sex and the City 2 and Smash.
Philip graduated from the University of Michigan and the Cleveland Institute of Music and was a co-concertmaster and principal second of the New World Symphony under Michael Tilson Thomas.
